Mirror, mirror on the wall… what the heck is my face shape? Knowing your shape can inform different beauty practices—from contouring to hairstyling—so it’s essential to be in the know. But how can you determine which face shape is yours? According to Dr. David Cangello at NYC’s Cangello Plastic Surgery, it’s a process of elimination. “There are many characterizations of facial shape that exist,” he explains. “But a few generally recognized categories include heart, square, rectangle, round, oval, or diamond.”To find our face shape, we have to “look at the face straight on in the frontal view.” Cangello uses specific landmarks, such as the Eurion, Zygion, and Gonion, to determine the appropriate shape. “These points are located on both sides of the face, basically at the temples, cheekbones, and angles of the lower jaw, respectively,” he says.

Ahead, Cangello breaks down six different face shapes. Find yours below.

1

Rectangle

“If the face is similar width at the temples, cheekbones, and angles of the lower jaw, but elongated vertically, it would be a rectangle,” Cangello says. “This is different from a square face shape, which is not elongated vertically.”

2

Round

“A round face would have wider measurements across, more like a square, but the jawline would taper and be more curvilinear from the angle of the lower jaw to the chin,” he explains. “The forehead hairline would also be more arching, as opposed to straight across. These faces tend to have fuller soft tissue than a square face.”

3

Oval

“Just as the round has similar measurements of width as a square, an oval would have similar measurements to a rectangle,” says Cangello. “The oval would have similar features to the round face at the hair and jawline, but be more elongated.”

4

Diamond

“The diamond face is widest at the cheekbones,” he says. “The jawline tapers to a pointier chin going from the angles of the lower jaw to the chin. And the top of the face tapers and narrows slightly going from the cheekbones to the top of the forehead.”

5

Square

“If the face is the same width at the temples, cheek bones and angles of the lower jaw, it is essentially a square face.”

6

Heart Shaped

“If the widest distance is at the temples and the face gradually narrows at the cheek bones, and moreso at the angles of the mandibles, you can picture sort of an upside down triangle,” Cangello says. “[This] would be heart shaped.”
